Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (FEGLI)

Reliable life insurance for federal employees and their families.

FEGLI

FEGLI is the Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance Program, established on August 29, 1954. It is the largest group life insurance program in the world, covering over 4 million federal employees, retirees, and many of their family members.

Provides group term life insurance (pays a benefit if you pass away, but does not build cash value).

Basic insurance is automatically provided to most new federal employees.

Basic insurance costs are shared—you pay two-thirds, and the government pays one-third.

Premiums are deducted from your paycheck unless you waive coverage.

FEGLI Coverage

Basic Coverage

Most federal employees are automatically enrolled in Basic insurance, which provides essential life insurance coverage. It equals your annual salary, rounded up to the next $1,000, plus $2,000. Premiums are .16¢ per $1,000 per pay period (postal employees pay nothing), and costs do not increase with age. You can waive coverage if you choose.

Option A

Amount of Coverage: $10,000.
Who is Covered: You.
Cost per Biweekly Pay Period: Starting at 20¢.
Cost Increases with Age?: Yes.
Automatic Enrollment: No, you must elect this coverage.

Option A adds a fixed amount of coverage to your Basic insurance. It provides extra protection but requires you to actively sign up.

Option B

Amount of Coverage: 1 to 5 multiples of your salary (rounded to the next $1,000).
Who is Covered: You.
Cost per Biweekly Pay Period: Starting at 2¢ per $1,000 of coverage.
Cost Increases with Age?: Yes.
Automatic Enrollment: No, you must elect this coverage.

Option B allows you to increase coverage based on your salary, giving you more flexibility and higher death benefits than Option A.

Option C

Amount of Coverage: 1 to 5 multiples. Each multiple provides $5,000 for your spouse and $2,500 for each eligible child.
Who is Covered: Your spouse and unmarried dependent children under age 26.
Cost per Biweekly Pay Period: Starting at 22¢ per multiple.
Cost Increases with Age?: Yes.
Automatic Enrollment: No, you must elect this coverage.

Option C provides coverage for your family members and is ideal if you want life insurance protection for your spouse and children.
